Walking Into Preschool 7/31 #sol17

Walking in to M’s preschool

I sign him in and then do our usual routine

“Two, two, and three” he says to me.

“Two, two, and three” I say back.

Then we give each other two hugs, a kiss on each cheek and then three kissing hands each.

Then he turns and without hesitation finds his friends or a fun free choice activity.

My heart sores that he enjoys school so much already.

Even when his dad and I have had several reservations and frustrations with his teacher.

Even when she gives homework to four year olds…writing the entire alphabet and numbers to 30 plus a few words kind of homework for four year olds…writing on a blank piece of paper instead of helpful lined paper kind of homework for four year olds.

Even when she divides kids into boys and girls and continues to pass on centuries old gender roles to our baby.

Even when they take a one to two hour nap each day.

But, thankfully when I drop my kiddo off I don’t have to worry.

He has grown leaps and bounds already socially, emotionally, and even academically.

He has dear friends and still gets to play a lot.

They serve a variety of foods for breakfast and lunch, so even when he doesn’t eat a lot, he is exposed.  

His teacher does puppet shows and they all sing and dance a lot. She has not broke his love of reading and in fact seems to encourage and nurture it!

Each morning that we do two, two, and three I am thankful that we still have one more year before Kindergarten since my kiddo is a September birthday.

As a former K teacher, my eyes tear up at the thought of my little baby becoming such a big kid already!
